SWE-ECI volunteered at SWEET, a career conference for middle school and high school girls on December 18th. The conference was organized by Workplace Learning Connections and hosted by Kirkwood Community College.
Katie Morin, SWE-ECI president, led one of the break out sessions. She spoke about Aerospace Engineering, and helped the girls with a hands on rocket activity. The girls made paper rockets that they "launched" using straws, measuring the flight distances in the hallway. They then had the opportunity to team up, and design another rocket, incorporating ideas for improvement from their previous experiment.
The girls attended 3 break out sessions throughout the day, and had the opportunity to network at lunch with engineering women professionals. The event was a big success and the girls had a great time. All who participated are hoping for a similar (and maybe even bigger!) event next year.
