On Saturday, July 27th, SWE-ECI hosted the third annual All Iowa SWE Conference at the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City. It featured keynote speaker, Jo Miller, who gave the keynote address, "Build Your Brand as an Emerging Leader."
The event was attended by a number of professionals from other Iowa chapters such as Heart of Iowa and Quad Cities. It began with two breakout session options. The first was "Generations in the Workplace" led by Cathy Krier, SWE FY12 &13 Leadership Coaching Committee Chair. She gave a wonderful presentation filled with tips on how to communicate across generations and understand the style of your colleagues, leaders, and direct reports. The rest of the attendees went to the technical session led by D. Abdel-Malek, University of Iowa Professor and director of the University of Iowa Center for Computer-Aided Design. He gave a engrossing presentation on The How and Why of Digital Human Modeling complete with an interactive demonstration.
After a refreshment break, Jo Miller capped off the afternoon with the keynote address. Her talk emphasized the importance of finding your strengths and capitalizing on them. She stressed creating an elevator pitch for yourself that was descriptive and set you apart from your peers. Having a "thing" that you are known for helps you to get the recognition you deserve.
After the conference, a number of attendees, including Jo, went to Atlas for a fun networking dinner. Thank you to everyone who attended this year's conference and to the core board for planning the event.
