On October 19th, SWE-ECI hosted a lunch meeting and call in at Rockwell Collins in which we watched an archived webinar from the SWE Headquarters database entitled "Managing Up." A good number of members and non-members showed up both in person and on the netmeeting to watch and discuss.
With year end reviews occuring at many companies in East Central Iowa, the webinar gave many good tips on how to manage expectations and communication in the workplace, especially with your manager.
Consultant and Northwestern professor Aleen Bayard presented the webinar, discussing topics such as how to understand your boss' communication style so as to maximize your understanding of his or her expectations. Some bosses may not feel in control unless you give a full update with facts, but others might not read paragraphs worth of updates and would instead like just the highlights. She also discussed how to handle micromanagement, multiple bosses, and delivering bad news.
After watching the webinar during the first hour and enjoying a yummy lunch from Noodles & Co., we spent the last half hour discussing what we had seen and our reactions. We discussed the value of one-on-one meetings with our bosses and how we could leverage our new knowledge during the year end review process. It was a great opportunity to learn about other SWE member's best practices and viewpoints. Thank you to all who attended!
