We hope you can join us next year!
WE22's theme was A World of Opportunity Awaits. We had five SWE-ECI members attend the conference, going to multiple sessions across the three days, Oct. 20th - 22nd. Many of them recruited for their respective companies, as well. As part of a long-standing tradition, on Friday night, our professional members got together with 13 Iowa Hawkeye collegiates to get dinner and socialize. Everyone had an enjoyable time relaxing and refueling for the rest of the conference. Between stellar professional development sessions, a massive career fair, and multiple thought-provoking keynote presentations there was no lack of conversation at the dinner table! Lastly, on Saturday two of our ECI members volunteered at SWE's "Invent It. Build It." K-12 Outreach event to encourage girls to choose a career in engineering and technology. We hope you can join us next year!

On January 13th, SWE-ECI hosted a virtual webinar over the lunch hour featuring the WE21 Closing Keynote by Patti Poppe. During this session, attendees learned about the Japanese concept IKIGAI, Patti shared her IKIGAI, and attendees discussed how to apply it to our own lives. The keynote prompted us all to think about how we can have full purpose-driven lives. We're grateful that SWE made these conference recordings available for three months following WE21.
On September 15th, SWE-ECI hosted a virtual webinar over the lunch hour on the topic of "The Cure for Burnout." (HINT: it isn't self-care!)
Through this difficult time, you may be experiencing burnout, and not even know it! In an introspective and deeply relatable conversation, the presenters detailed three telltale signs to indicate when stress is getting the best of you. They even shared actionable ways to feel safe in your body when you're "burning out." Together, we learned some strategies of completing the stress cycle, and continued to gain knowledge from each other from a conversation following the session. It was truly great to hear advice, tips & tricks from the participants in the group as well. If you missed the session, here is the link to watch it! WE20's theme was Practice Curiosity and occurred virtually this year over the course of two weeks: Nov. 2nd -13th. We had at least six ECI members attend the conference this year to Practice Curiosity during several live or pre-recorded sessions. We also had members recruiting for their respective companies. The highlight for ECI was being recognized during one of the keynote sessions as winner of the SWE Bronze Mission Award for exemplifying SWE's strategic mission through our section events. There are a few On-Demand sessions available to the general public. If you are interested in checking them out, then you can access them on SWE's website by scrolling down to the On-Demand section dated October 26th-30th.
We are all looking forward to next year's WE21 conference and hoping it can be in-person in Indianapolis, IN! On Wednesday, April 15th, a few of the core-board members with previous internship and co-op experience met with the University of Iowa SWE Collegiate section, to share some pearls of wisdom to enable them to be successful and make the best of their secured internships for the consequent semesters. It was a very informal and open discussion where the collegiate members felt free to bring up any issues and questions that they had. All in all, it was a great event and we hope that these members have a very positive experience at their respective internships.
On Wednesday, April 8th, SWE-ECI members throughout the corridor gathered for lunch and to watch "Managing Through Influence Communication Skills Around Accountability, Conflict and Candor," a webinar presented by Aleen Bayard from Marketzing. The webinar was one of many available for free to SWE members on the society website.
On Thursday, January 15, nearly 50 people attended SWE-ECI’s “New Year, New You” event at White Star Ale House in Cedar Rapids. Organizational development coach Gale Mote gave a very engaging address to help attendees understand how to use their strengths to find new success in 2015. SWE-ECI was honored to host her.
On Wednesday, November 12, Companies in the corridor hosted conference rooms with pizza to watch the webinar and listen to brand strategist, Catherine Kaputa. She stressed that many strategies used by companies to pitch their products can be leveraged when creating your personal brand and pitch.
This year’s SWE Annual Conference was held in Los Angeles, California from October 22nd to 25th. It truly captured the essence of its theme, “A Global Exchange for Change.”
