Step into STEM! Sparks Interest in Engineering for Junior Girl Scouts

This year's event was a great success! 30 Junior Girl Scouts attended "Step into STEM!" hosted by SWE-ECI where they spent the day learning about engineering and participating in various activities with our volunteers.
A few of the activities included using ASCII to "code" the letters of their name into a necklace, building a motorized kick-stick to send ping pong balls flying across the room, and making super slime!- a polymer made from glue and borax. The day wrapped up with an Egg Drop team activity where groups of 3 girls had a limited budget to 'purchase' supplies for their device- aimed to protect an egg from cracking when dropped from an elevated height. We had many successful teams!
Sending a big thanks to all our volunteers that help make this event possible, it's always wonderful to see the next generation excited about Science and Technology!

SWE Keeps our Science Olympiad Connection Strong

On October 30th, 5 members of SWE-ECI spent the evening at Mount Vernon High School with an enthusiastic group of Science Olympiaders. After a successful first year of partnership where the team took second in state, we returned to the classroom to help kick things off again. Teams were working on their projects like "Wright Stuff," an airplane building competition and other building events. We provided support and helped encourage them to use the engineering design process. We also brought pizza! Overall we all had a lot of fun and the team got a good start on preparing to try to take first at state this year!

How to Make the Best of Your Internships

On Wednesday, April 15th, a few of the core-board members with previous internship and co-op experience met with the University of Iowa SWE Collegiate section, to share some pearls of wisdom to enable them to be successful and make the best of their secured internships for the consequent semesters. It was a very informal and open discussion where the collegiate members felt free to bring up any issues and questions that they had. All in all, it was a great event and we hope that these members have a very positive experience at their respective internships.

SWE-ECI Sponsors Dinner and Panel at The University of Iowa, High School Conference

On April 10th, seven SWE-ECI members participated in High School Conference, hosted by The University of Iowa’s SWE Collegiate Section. High School Conference is a weekend event that allows high school juniors and seniors to learn about potential careers in engineering, visit The University of Iowa, explore the College of Engineering, and interact with SWE.

SWE-ECI provided dinner for 19 High School attendees and 22 SWE Collegiate volunteers. After dinner, the SWE-ECI members formally introduced themselves and answered questions about their college experiences and careers in engineering. Amongst the panelists, the following 5 companies were represented: Procter & Gamble Oral Care, Rockwell Collins, General Mills, ITC Holdings, and Quaker Oats. The UI SWE Collegiate Section and SWE-ECI are already coordinating for next year’s event to make it even more successful than this year!

SWE-ECI Continues Support of Mt. Vernon Science Olympiad

After a great event last fall, three members of SWE-ECI's core board returned to Mt. Vernon High School bright and early on Saturday, March 28th to help the students prepare and practice for their Science Olympiad events. After a successful practice event at their Spring Invitational, the students are frantically redesigning and preparing for the State competition at Coe College on April 18th.

SWE-ECI Supports the 2015 Iowa Regional Future City Competition

On January 24th, Prairie High School hosted the 2015 Iowa Regional Future City Competition which is a national, project-based learning experience where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Students work as a team and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January throughout the country. Regional winners then represent their region at the National Finals in Washington, DC in February.

SWE-ECI Helps Girl Scouts "Step into STEM"

SWE ECI held their annual outreach event 'Step into STEM' on Saturday, December 6th. Twenty junior girls scouts attended the event where they were guided by SWE volunteers through fun science and engineering themed activities.

SWE-ECI Supports Mt. Vernon HS's Science Olympiad Team

On Saturday October 18th SWE-ECI joined the Mt. Vernon High School's Science Olympiad Team at one of their first event practices of the year. SWE was able to help students review last years designs, discuss how the events went, and what were the strengths and weaknesses of deigns.

Career Fair Prep Panel!

Five members of SWE-ECI held a panel for The University of Iowa SWE Collegiate Section on Tuesday,September 16th, to prepare the young women for the Career Fair that took place on Thursday, September 25th.

SWE-ECI Supports Mt. Vernon Middle School Science Olympiad Team

Two members of the Mount Vernon Middle School Science Olympiad team came to present to the SWE ECI Core Board on Thursday June 5th. Clarissa and Zach, 8th Graders, came to share their experience that led the team to this year's National Competition in Orlando, Florida.
