On December 11, 2013 members and friends of SWE-ECI met at White Star Ale House to learn about relaxation and stress relief (a fitting topic for the holidays!), and have a little fun while networking.

Held on April 30, the 16th Annual IEEE ProCon Conference was an excellent opportunity to improve your professional qualities and skills. The Cedar Rapids section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) hosts this annual conference at the Cedar Rapids Marriot. This year’s conference included two tracks: Project Management and Leadership Development.
This year’s Iowa Women’s Leadership Conference, Start Smart. Lead Strong, was held at the new convention center and Marriott at the Iowa River Landing in Coralville. The two day event started with pre-conference workshops on April 23rd and concluded with an inspiring talk by Gloria Steinman on April 24th.
To finish of E-Week, SWE-ECI helped with the 2013 Iowa Championship for FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) at the University of Iowa. Each year a new challenge is presented to teams of 7-12 graders to solve by building a robot. This year’s competition, “Ring It Up!,” was a lot of fun to watch. A total of 48 teams from five states competed in two divisions for the privilege of advancing to The World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 24-27.
This year three SWE-ECI members supported the Iowa Regional Future City Competition again. For the special award, Rowena Aburto and Alyssa Reinhardt were looking for the team that used the most aesthetic diversity in the materials used to build the model of their city. SWE-ECI volunteered at SWEET, a career conference for middle school and high school girls on December 18th. The conference was organized by Workplace Learning Connections and hosted by Kirkwood Community College.
Tuesday October 30th, core board members Becky Reck, Katie Morin, Olie Ray, and Nikki Morey attended the Corridor Women Connect (CWC) Fall celebration of women leaders. The event featured a panel of women leaders from local companies including Brenda Clancy, Chief Operations Officer at Transamerica, Nancy Kasparek, Regional President at U.S. Bank, Linda Mattes, Director, general planning and Construction Alliant Engergy, and Anne Parmley, President, National Services at Pearson.
On April 14, five members of SWE-ECI, along with approximately 40 other women from Iowa and Illinois met in Davenport, IA for the 2nd Annual Iowa SWE Conference, “Blending Communications with Technology.” After the success of the ECI hosted conference last year, the Quad Cities-Muscatine section took the task this year. The event took place at the Best Western Plus (SteepleGate Inn) which was an easily accessible and intimate venue. The day consisted of networking, workshops, wonderful meals, and a technical tour.
