The WE22 Fireside Chat was a cozy one this year as we sat around a fire, made s’mores, and ate pizza. SWE-ECI met to share their favorite speakers and takeaways from sessions they attended. WE22 was in Houston this year and it was packed with lots of amazing sessions and workshops. Thank you to Kristen Wagner and Samantha Armstrong for sharing what you learned. From building a good networking community to learning how to leverage your leadership strengths, there was a great discussion about the sessions. And now to plan for next year's WE23 in Los Angeles!

WE22's theme was A World of Opportunity Awaits. We had five SWE-ECI members attend the conference, going to multiple sessions across the three days, Oct. 20th - 22nd. Many of them recruited for their respective companies, as well. As part of a long-standing tradition, on Friday night, our professional members got together with 13 Iowa Hawkeye collegiates to get dinner and socialize. Everyone had an enjoyable time relaxing and refueling for the rest of the conference. Between stellar professional development sessions, a massive career fair, and multiple thought-provoking keynote presentations there was no lack of conversation at the dinner table! Lastly, on Saturday two of our ECI members volunteered at SWE's "Invent It. Build It." K-12 Outreach event to encourage girls to choose a career in engineering and technology. We hope you can join us next year! On Wednesday, September 14th SWE-ECI hosted a lunch webinar that included two TED Talk Topics. The first TED Talk was Irene Mora on "For women in pursuit of motherhood and a career". Irene talked about her experience as a child of a working mother in the 90s, when it still was quite novel to move for a mother's career. She said that so many people like to focus on the negatives of having a working mother, but she wanted to highlight the positives such as getting to travel around the world. The second TED talk was Leila Hoteit's "3 Lessons on Success from an Arab Businesswoman." Leila talked about how she manages motherhood and a career in a culture that is very anti-mothers working. There were great discussions among the women at our companies on how we balance motherhood and career or how it has been modeled for us. There were also some really good perspectives from multiple cultures - things got real!
With this lunch webinar we were able to bring back onsite locations at P&G, Collins, Quaker, and Schneider Electric - which was GREAT! Thank you to the 40+ people who joined in person and on Zoom to watch and contribute to the valuable discussions! The new SWE-ECI Core Board had the opportunity to meet each other in person for some bowling at Spare Time. It was a great opportunity to get to know the 3 new members on the Core Board this year - Megan, Shelby, and Keerthena and continue to grow our relationships with our veteran Core Board Members! We are looking forward to a great FY and hope to see many of you in person soon!
SWE ECI hosted the Welcome to the Corridor Trivia on Tuesday, July 19th at Noelridge Park ITC Pavilion. There was a good mix of ECI veterans, new hires, and interns. We had three teams who all brought their A-game, making it a close competition. Jill, Emily, & Riley proved superior in their knowledge of Iowa people, places, things, and companies.
On Tuesday June 14th SWE-ECI hosted a lunch webinar that included two TED Talk Topics. The first TED Talk was Simon Sinek's on "How Great Leaders Inspire Action?". Simon focused on how leaders should lead with the WHY to inspire change and action. We talked about how important it is to explain the why when it comes to implementing sustainable changes, especially in the manufacturing environment. It is critical to gain buy in on the process or idea first. The second TED talk was Nigel Marsh's on "How to Make Work - Life Balance Work". Nigel had some great nuggets on how to measure the balance of your life between personal life, work life, and relationships. He discussed how important it is to evaluate the balance in your life within the correct time frame. He discussed how quality of time is more important than quantity of time and its the small changes that can help us be more balanced. There were great discussions on how people set boundaries with their employees and what strategies are used to maintain the balance.
With this lunch webinar we were able to bring back onsite locations at Collins, Quaker, and Schneider Electric - which was GREAT! Thank you to the 30+ people who joined in person and on Zoom to watch and contribute to the valuable discussions! Ballots have been submitted & votes have been tallied!
