After the storm hit in August SWE-ECI reached out to several Cedar Rapids schools to see if there was any way we could support them during these difficult times. Cleveland Elementary and Grant Wood Elementary replied with a list of school supplies and cleaning needs, including back to school clothes for some students. SWE-ECI is proud to say we were able to donate a car load of school and cleaning supplies to each elementary school. Thank you to those SWE-ECI members that donated individually! And thank you to our K-12 Outreach Chair, Nicole Felderman, who organized the donation drive, shopping, and delivery.
On Saturday, October 17, SWE hosted our annual Jr. Girl Scout Day "Step into STEM" in a virtual format. We had a great group of 4th and 5th graders that learned more about SWE, STEM, and engineering, while also participating in activities such as coding their own necklace, building tall towers, and extracting strawberry DNA. This event would not have been possible without the help of our amazing local engineering volunteers who spent their Saturday morning as STEM role models and leading the girls through activities. We had a great event and are already looking forward to next year!
A big shout-out to Laura Yindra for volunteering her time on September 25th to present Java coding and Cyber Security to the Davenport & Australia South Coast SWENext Clubs. The SWENext girls use Java to program their FRC (First Robotics Club) robot, so their first goal was being able to read Java. Laura also discussed the best ways to protect personal information and provided the girls with some tips on creating and protecting passwords. Thanks again, Laura!
With the fall and winter being popular job hunting times for college students, our SWE-ECI section spent the past few months reviewing resumes from the U of I and ISU engineering students! This was our first time offering a review like this, but with such positive feedback and dozens of resumes submitted we are looking forward to hosting it again in the future!!
With universities hosting their virtual career fairs this past month, SWE had the opportunity to host a panel of engineering professionals with the U of I and ISU SWE sections! We had such a lovely turn out. It was great to hear about so many upcoming opportunities! We wish our SWE collegiates luck as they continue to hunt for full-time, co-op, and internship positions for the upcoming year!
