On Saturday, October 27, a group of 4th and 5th grade Jr Girl Scouts took part in SWE's Step into STEM Day. From coding their name in a necklace, to building a circuit inside an LED card, to crafting a mechanism that protects an egg from a 5 foot drop, and more, the day was filled with a variety of hands on activities that exemplified the concepts of engineering in a fun, interactive way. This event could not have been possible without the help of the amazing 17 volunteers who graciously spent their time being STEM role models and encouraging the girls throughout the activities. The day was a great engineering outreach event, full of learning and laughter!

WE18 in Minneapolis kicked off on Thursday October 18th with an inspiring Keynote Speech from Cindy Kent, Best Buy Board of Director and Healthcare Executive, who talked about her lessons learned in her career and life. Cindy set a positive and inspirational tone for the entire conference. SWE-ECI members attended sessions about leadership, how to combat the over used (often incorrectly used) word "sorry", Unconscious Bias, lessons learned on the way to the corner office, when to compete, when to cooperate, and when to do both, how to identify and avoid career pitfalls, and many many more. SWE-ECI had a great time networking with current and previous SWE-ECI members, and making new friends throughout the conference. All in all, the conference was successful!
On Tuesday September 2018, SWE-ECI hosted a Lunch Webinar at many companies in the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City area. The Webinar topic was Change Fatigue. Michael Seitchik spoke about how change was constant, not episodic and about how we can better prepare ourselves, our employees, and our organizations to adapt to the constant change. Seitchik spoke a lot about the different stages of change and how often times when we implement change we forget that the folks affected are in a different stage as they are starting to process that change. SWE-ECI hopes everyone was able to take a key nugget away from the lunch webinar.
The CR Women's Forum’s Recognizing Women Subcommittee in collaboration with Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosted a SWE/et Success group mentoring event on Friday, August 17th in the 106 Auditorium. There were 14 mentors that had spent some time with a table offering insights and guidance, based on questions from the mentees. After that the mentors had rotated to another table and repeated this process. Mentors had offered advice on strategizing toward stretch goals, tackling challenging assignments, advancing through career, pursuing promotions or other job opportunities within Rockwell, and more.
The event was a success with praises from mentors and mentees, alike. It was an excellent opportunity for early to mid-career women to gain insights and support from well-established women at Rockwell Collins. At the end of the mentoring session, Nishi presented a 5 minute speech highlighting the mission, vision and goals of SWE-ECI. She also urged the attendees to sign up and avail the member sponsorship that is being offered by Rockwell Collins. |
