Members from the local SWENext and SWE professional sections traveled to Iowa City on Thursday, March 22 to visit the P&G Oral B facility. With the proper bump caps, safety glasses, and hearing protection on, the group embarked on their manufacturing tour. They learned about an assortment of filament types, bristling/molding techniques, packaging options, and power toothbrush operations. The SWE group also saw specialized machinery and quality assurance measures during the floor walk. Thank you to all who participated, and an extra shout-out to our wonderful tour guide, Jill!

To kick off early SWE membership registration and renewal SWE-ECI hosted a SWE-formation Session on Thursday, April 12th at White Star Ale House. We ran through a short presentation on the benefits of joining SWE as well as examples of events SWE-ECI hosts to support the Society's mission and goals. We had some great discussions about events and focus topics we could do for FY19 (ie. unconscious bias, Myers-Briggs, escape room) - after all, we want to host events that you guys would be interested in attending! If you have any suggestions for events or focus topics you'd like to see in FY19 please email them to eci.swe@gmail.com. Additionally, we had a free head shot station and raffled off a door prize. Head shots have been emailed out, please contact eci.membership@gmail.com if you have not received yours! Congratulations to Vanashree for winning the raffle and thank you to all that participated in the event! On April 6th, several members of our local SWE chapter were able to participate on a professional panel at Iowa's annual High School Conference. This is an event that brings high school girls to campus to learn about engineering, and the different opportunities available to them at the University of Iowa.
On the panel we enjoyed sharing our advice and past experiences with choosing a major and a school, as well as about how we choose our career path. We had a diverse group with a range of majors, experience levels, and backgrounds, and the students asked really good questions so I think everyone involved had a great time! Afterwards we were able to enjoy dinner with the group, which SWE-ECI also provides for the conference. Thanks so much to our awesome volunteers, and also to the Iowa ladies for putting together such a well organized conference. It is one we look forward to every year! |
