Katie Allen, SWE-ECI President, and Melissa Plourde, SWE-ECI Section Representative, attended the annual HART leadership conference for Region H this past weekend, September 24th. The conference was held in Minneapolis and despite some travel concerns with the flooding, everyone got there safely and had a great time. Leaders from all over the Midwest came for a day of governance updates, professional development, best practice sharing, and networking.
For those who do not know, the Society is going through a period of restructuring and rebranding. This started with our new logo last year. This year it means that our region conferences are ending. The Region H conference at University of Michigan in March 2017 will be our last regional conference. They will be replaced by a global system called WE Local. More information can be found at http://welocal.swe.org/. The locations for 2018 should be announced by the end of the year. Future changes are forthcoming but are likely to include the dissolving of regions to make it easier to spread internationally and centralize leadership. We should get more updates at WE16!
The rest of the weekend was spent learning from other sections about best practices for communicating and involving members. Don't be surprised if a few changes get implemented this year! Overall it was a great experience and re-energized us for the year ahead. We ended the weekend with dinner at the Mall of America, pictured below!
