On Thursday, January 15, nearly 50 people attended SWE-ECI’s “New Year, New You” event at White Star Ale House in Cedar Rapids. Organizational development coach Gale Mote gave a very engaging address to help attendees understand how to use their strengths to find new success in 2015. SWE-ECI was honored to host her. Gale’s first main point was that happy people tend to be more successful, so she encouraged us to work to live happier. Be grateful, be a “bucket filler”, stop multi-tasking, exercise, and random acts of kindness were several of the things she offered up as ways to live happier. Happiness drives success. Gale’s second major point was to celebrate and build on your strengths, while managing around your weaknesses. She explained the difference between a strength, talent, and passion, and defined what a weakness is. A strength is signaled by a yearning (need to do it), ability to rapidly learn (catch on quickly), satisfaction (love doing it), and timelessness (time flies when you do it). A weakness is a non-talent required by your job. A good way to manage around these is to try and bring your strengths to a task you may be weaker at. After Gale’s presentation, attendees participated in a “fuzzy elephant” gift exchange, where warm and fuzzy gifts were exchanged as part of an ice breaker game. Everyone went home with a small, fun gift and got to know each other a little better. Prizes were raffled off as well. Thanks to all who came out and made this event a success, we hope to see you again soon!
