Future Cities: SWE ECI plans to support the Future Cities competition again this year at Prairie Point Middle School on Saturday, January 24th. Schools from all over Iowa compete in this competition made up of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. This year 31 teams are signed up for the competition! The theme for this year is ‘Urban Agriculture’. SWE ECI will sponsor and judge the 3D city models for a special award- 'Most Diverse Infrastructure'. We look forward to attending and awarding the middle school students' creativity and hard work!
SWE ECI held their annual outreach event 'Step into STEM' on Saturday, December 6th. Twenty junior girls scouts attended the event where they were guided by SWE volunteers through fun science and engineering themed activities. The girls made their own hidden burglar alarms where they learned about and created an electrical circuit (electrical engineering). They also created a polymer glow-in-the-dark super slime and tested its various properties (chemical engineering), and mixed various edible ingredients together to make chocolate asphalt (civil engineering). After lunch the girls broke into groups of two to design, build, and test lunar landers that allowed two marshmallow astronauts to safely land on the moon (aerospace engineering). All the girls who attended went home with everything they made, and a SWE girl scout badge. The event was a success and strongly supported the SWE ECI mission to get the next generation excited about science and engineering!
