After a great event last fall, three members of SWE-ECI's core board returned to Mt. Vernon High School bright and early on Saturday, March 28th to help the students prepare and practice for their Science Olympiad events. After a successful practice event at their Spring Invitational, the students are frantically redesigning and preparing for the State competition at Coe College on April 18th.
The SWE members helped the students redesign their weight drop mechanism for the "Air Trajectories" event. The weight will drop on a beach ball that provides air pressure to launch a ping pong ball. They also helped take measurements for the "Bungee Drop" where standard weights are dropped from a given height using a student designed bungee cord. The weights must get as close to the ground as possible without touching it. Other events the students were working on were "Write It. Do It.," "Bridge Building," and "Wright Stuff." An exciting morning full of engineering and design flew by. Good luck to all the students at state! We hope to continue our partnership and expand our volunteer base next year. Keep an eye out for sign ups! To learn more about Science Olympiad, you can visit their website.
