As this fiscal year (FY) comes to an end on June 30th, we have opened our Call for FY21 Core Board (CB) Members! We have many positions available, all of which you can see below with descriptions.
The minimum commitment to being on Core Board is:
Elected positions are those that are specifically defined in our bylaws and are highlighted below. Our nominating committee will be reviewing all applicants and ensuring that we have someone for each role. If there is a position with no applications, then the nominating committee may contact you to see if you are willing to fulfill a different or an additional role. If you are interested in an appointed position (traditional ones outlined below, as well), then please fill out the form below. There will be no election for these positions and they will be confirmed by the FY21 core board after elections!

- Attending monthly Core Board meetings
- Attending/supporting SWE-ECI section events
- Coordinate minimum one event per fiscal year (July through June)
- Understand how to add events to the SWE-ECI website and check for responses
- Any additional responsibilities listed below by position;

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING THE SWE-ECI FY21 Core Board:
- Fill out survey below, indicating your top two positions by April 17th.
- Submit below or email a picture, brief bio, and explanation of why you are interested in the position(s) to eci.nominating.committee@gmail.com & eci.swe@gmail.com for the election ballot by April 17th.
- Be willing to start attending monthly meetings in June!
- IMPORTANT NOTE: All elected officers must be dues paying members of the Society, starting July 1st. Please visit here for more information on becoming a paid member. Committee chairs and other appointed positions need not be paid members. Additionally, only current dues-paying members will be eligible to vote for the elected positions.
Elected Core Board Positions:
PRESIDENT:
"Face of SWE-ECI" - provides strong direction, clear communication goals, and energizes CB and the section with enthusiasm.
VICE PRESIDENT:
"Backup for President" - Will take over for the president if necessary for the remainder of this FY and also fills in at meetings or conferences if the president is unable to attend.
TREASURER:
"Money keeper" - safe keeper of all financial activity and SWE assets.
SECRETARY:
Assists with administrative items and record keeping.
COMMUNICATIONS / MARKETING SECRETARY:
"Marketer and Social Media Guru" - guides the "image of SWE", has an eye for marketing, skilled at getting information out quickly in a way that gains interest; channels enthusiasm via communication tools.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY:
"Recruiter" - outgoing, understands SWE's value and enthusiastically talks about it with others, seeks out ways to increase membership and involvement.
Appointed Committee Chair or other Positions (non-exhaustive list):
Note: These positions can have two chairs. Many lend themselves well to it.
K-12 OUTREACH CHAIR:
"STEM Go-To" – passion for STEM and outreach, creative, proactive communicator within SWE and out of SWE to STEM connections; positive and persistent!
COLLEGE OUTREACH CHAIR:
"The University of Iowa Liaison" – familiar with The University of Iowa SWE
GIRL SCOUT DAY CHAIR (JR OR SR):
Coordinates Junior Girl Scout Day (GSD) event each fall or Sr. Girl Scout Day/overnight event in the spring.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CHAIR:
Advocates professional development for section.
PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY LIAISON:
Contact with other professional societies, local companies’ women's’ networks, & other Iowa professional SWE sections.
SPECIAL EVENT COORDINATOR:
"The Party Planner" - For those interested in being more involved with SWE-ECI, but not quite ready to commit an entire year to the Core Board.
PRESIDENT:
"Face of SWE-ECI" - provides strong direction, clear communication goals, and energizes CB and the section with enthusiasm.
- Leads strategic planning for section activity; finalizes fiscal year plan.
- Authorize disbursement of section funds within budget approved by the core board.
- Review and approve year-end section financial report.
- Be an authorized signatory on all section accounts.
- Assists and facilitates all events / section responsibilities where needed.
- Runs Core Board meetings.
- Delegates newsletter article writing.
- Votes on behalf of the section; encourages section to vote.
- Represents SWE-ECI @ WE & WE Local Conferences (in person meetings).
- Builds networks and relationships within community and with contacts at local engineering companies.
- Represent the section before the public
- Appoint chairs of all committees, with approval of core board, except chair of the nominating committee.
- Approve appointment of all committee members, except members of the nominating committee.
- Provide oversight and guidance to committee chairs as needed.
- Facilitate elections for next fiscal year with help from nominating committee.
- Execute business and policies of the section.
- Fulfill governance documents.
- Must have minimum one year experience on ECI core board.
VICE PRESIDENT:
"Backup for President" - Will take over for the president if necessary for the remainder of this FY and also fills in at meetings or conferences if the president is unable to attend.
- Contributes strong ideas; demonstrates support and enthusiasm.
- Assists president with tasks (overflow) & builds close working relationship.
- Orders name tags for new Core Board members.
- Manages section inventory of supplies.
- Attends conferences.
- Coordinate outreach activities, unless a committee chair(s) is designated to assume this role.
- Serve as liaison to collegiate relations, unless a committee chair(s) is designated to assume this role.
- Provide oversight and guidance to committee chairs as assigned.
TREASURER:
"Money keeper" - safe keeper of all financial activity and SWE assets.
- Keeps tabs on funds status and money related interfaces.
- Drafts fiscal year budget with President and Vice President for review by Core Board.
- Maintains financial records throughout the year against the budget.
- Handles section reimbursement policy and takes care of reimbursements to section members.
- Submits Financial Report to SWE HQ on time.
- Submits e-tax card.
- Submits Collins Aerospace funding application.
- Manages PayPal account and sets up online registration for events.
- Maintains calendar with due dates for financial responsibilities and notifies President when dates are upcoming and items are submitted.
- Attends conferences.
SECRETARY:
Assists with administrative items and record keeping.
- Prepares and sends out newsletter each month; ensures assigned articles are written.
- Takes monthly meeting minutes.
- Maintains and updates SWE Google calendar to reflect upcoming section event dates/times.
- Conducts website training for new core board members.
- Applies for section awards given out at WE Local and WE annual conference.
COMMUNICATIONS / MARKETING SECRETARY:
"Marketer and Social Media Guru" - guides the "image of SWE", has an eye for marketing, skilled at getting information out quickly in a way that gains interest; channels enthusiasm via communication tools.
- Creates or delegates creation of a “flyer”.
- Markets each event at least two weeks prior on Facebook (Twitter & LinkedIn for large events) by posting event details.
- Makes an effort to get other CB members and people within the section to get an “online chatter” going prior to event.
- Posts pictures and an event highlight to social media during and/or after an event takes place.
- Passes information to other networks (women networks, societies, etc.) to market events.
- Maintains list of communication “channels” and contacts through which information about events can be pushed.
- Maintains and updates SWE-ECI website.
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY:
"Recruiter" - outgoing, understands SWE's value and enthusiastically talks about it with others, seeks out ways to increase membership and involvement.
- Maintains membership database by pulling section reports at least quarterly and comparing to/updating with SWE-ECI database.
- Track member involvement/attendance at events.
- Maintain/update email lists.
- Actively works to recruit new members by talking about SWE and inviting anyone to SWE events.
- Coordinates one membership recruitment event each fiscal year.
- Leads recruiting events at local companies.
- Expands SWE network by attending other organizations events or other events that may have potentially interested SWE members.
- Conducts evaluations for events to improve membership involvement.
- Encourage Society membership renewal – contact unpaid members with help from President.

- Works with local SWENext sections to support/plan events.
- Assists in getting SWENext volunteers for ECI events, when desired (e.g. Jr. GSD).
- Communicates about any STEM outreach events within the area; recommends and encourages SWE-ECI participation where appropriate.
- Recruits volunteers for SWE ECI STEM outreach events.
- Maintains contact list for STEM connections.
COLLEGE OUTREACH CHAIR:
"The University of Iowa Liaison" – familiar with The University of Iowa SWE
- Approachable and supportive; a positive role model and proactive communicator.
- Attends UI SWE meetings, as needed, relays info to ECI.
- Attends ECI meetings, relays info to UI SWE.
- Organizes a panel of professionals prior to fall Iowa Career Fair.
- Assists in getting UI SWE volunteers for ECI events, when desired (e.g. Jr. GSD).
- Coordinates SWE ECI involvement in U of Iowa SWE’s High School Conference.
- Coordinates meet up at Annual Conference and We Local Conference.
- Organizes one spring upgrade event with U of Iowa SWE seniors.
- Looks for other opportunities in which SWE-ECI can partner with, mentor, or otherwise assist the student section.
GIRL SCOUT DAY CHAIR (JR OR SR):
Coordinates Junior Girl Scout Day (GSD) event each fall or Sr. Girl Scout Day/overnight event in the spring.
- Organizes and facilitates 'Step into STEM' Girl Scout event with Junior Girl Scouts (4th-5th grade) or 'Step into STEM Again' Girl Scout event with Cadet/Senior Girl Scouts (6th - 12th grade).
- Builds relationship with the Girl Scout (GS) community; seeks partnership opportunities.
- Communicates with contact at Girl Scout Headquarters to reserve event space, advertise event, get keys, etc.
- Selects and plans activities, creates supply lists, maintains event budget.
- Responsible for the following (may delegate): purchasing supplies (including badges); printing agendas and handouts; ordering lunch; recruiting and communicating with volunteers; set-up, execution, and tear-down for the event; GS and parent evaluations.
- Desirable that this person has attended at least one past GSD event.
- Attends CB meetings as needed (min. fiscal year kickoff and three leading up to event).
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CHAIR:

- Organizes one professional development event.
- Helps maintain contacts with businesses and speakers.
- May help with other professional development opportunities throughout the year.
- Attends CB meetings as needed (min. fiscal year kickoff and three leading up to event).
PROFESSIONAL SOCIETY LIAISON:
Contact with other professional societies, local companies’ women's’ networks, & other Iowa professional SWE sections.
- Keeps SWE-ECI connected with other professional societies like SHIP, NSBE, CREW, and women's networks at local companies.
- Keeps SWE-ECI connected with other SWE local sections nearby like Quad Cities, Cedar Valley, & Dubuque.
- Helps coordinate at least one joint event with another chapter or society.
- Attends CB meetings as needed (min. fiscal year kickoff and three leading up to event).
SPECIAL EVENT COORDINATOR:
"The Party Planner" - For those interested in being more involved with SWE-ECI, but not quite ready to commit an entire year to the Core Board.
- Lead organizer of 1 large event for SWE-ECI (event TBD at the FY21 kickoff meeting).
- Keeps the President & other core board members updated on progress of planning the event.
- Asks for help making decisions, as needed.
- Attends CB meetings as needed (min. fiscal yer kickoff and three leading up to the event).
